self-reflection
When thesis first started in August, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. Doing the domain map and beginning projects got me thinking about my interests and passions. From that I knew I wanted to work with nature, and study the natural patterns within it. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the process of my thesis class, and all of the practice that I did. I enjoyed how one project led to...
final critique
I got a lot of great feedback from the final critique, and even a few comments after class from some students! This final presentation included some new information and new prototypes that no one had seen before. I went deeper into the meaning of color and emotion, and more about what the patterns can make you feel. I also explored making urban patterns, which I had never done before. All of my...
in the works
i’m continuing to work and make patterns. I’m trying to decide which direction to go in and whether I should go deeper into the meaning of why I’m making the patterns. I’m really interested in color and the meaning of it. I am also looking into what surrounds us and how it makes us feel. As I said before, I am continuing to make artwork, but spending most of my time...

Crit Response
I got a lot of great feedback and advice from everyone in class. After my first round of making patterns, and then turning them into wallpapers and pillows, everyone told me to keep making and see what I learn. I made a few more patterns inspired from nature, and presented them at the design fair. At the fair, I got good feedback too. People gave me positive thoughts, but mentioned that maybe I...
next prototype
From the suggestions at the design fair I am going to work with fabrics more and see what I can create from them. With my original idea of only doing home products, I want to cover a chair, or make curtains, etc. I got a lot of recommendations for clothing and other products, so I also want to try a few small things such as scarves, a tank top, a tie, notebook covers, etc.
I will also continue...
Design Fair
It was so fun to see everyone’s projects and see what the other classes were up to! I think everyone did a really great job. I got some good reactions and feedback from my project from people who hadn’t seen it yet. Everyone said to just keep working and see what other patterns I can come up with and learn as I keep going. Many people suggested that I make a few clothing pieces from...
Thesis Statement
I am using nature as my inspiration to create patterns by looking at the shapes, colors and textures within it. These patterns will then be applied to wallpapers, fabrics and other furniture for the home with the idea of bringing nature and natural patterns inside.

Mystery Box
“What’s in your mystery box?”
What remains unknown?
Who will buy it? Am I making this for a specific type of person, or just people who enjoy interior design in general?
I am curious to see what techniques I pick up on as I keep working. How will my paintings/drawings and patterns change as I practice more and more.
What do you need to discover?
I need to research more...
Stories
1.) describe a context or situation in your thesis
The interior designer has her own company and is always looking for new products/fabrics/patterns/etc. She knows how much people are aware of the environment and being green. The items that had to do with nature seemed to be popular so she was looking to buy more. “Natural Patterns” used colors, shapes and patterns from nature...
Midterm Crit response
During the past few weeks while we have been working on our thesis, I was sort of lost. I let ideas come to me as I did one project at a time. I am really happy that I ended up with doing patterns with nature as my inspiration. I really enjoy doing it, and it is also a challenge. I was happy when I presented and people reacted well to what I was doing so far. I am curious to see what will come...

mobility shifts
I attended a lecture today called, Does What We Know Belong to All? The Intellectual Property Principles by John Willinky. He talked about what happens to our resources after we leave school and about the information we learn from text books. Why aren’t all books or research papers or articles available to everyone? They would help people learn, there are many benefits from it, but for some...
5x5 crit response
As I was working on my 5x5 projects last week, I found some more enjoyable to do than others. Because most of my projects at Parsons are done on the computer, I thought it would be interesting, and fun, to step away from computer designs and use my hands. Using markers, paint and collage really enhanced my creativity and made me look at things differently.
After showing the class my 5x5 work, I...

Shaughnessy Reading Response
“What is Graphic Design Today?”
The author talks about how graphic design has changed over the years. In the 1980’s design became strategized and professionalized. In the 1990’s the idea of branding came about, and designers would called themselves “branding-consultants”. As time went on, graphic design was not only about the...
Expanding my base design problem list.
-If I could change one thing about my life it would be…I wish i did more things for myself. Helping others is a great thing to do, and it is such a good feeling when you know you helped someone, but sometimes people need to do things for themselves. It is not selfish, we are only human and need time to do things we love. This needs to be time where you don’t do your school work, it is...
momi visit
I really enjoyed the Museum of the Moving Image. It was so cool to see all of the different movie costumes, sound effects, masks, and props. I loved all the simple things they had on display as well (happy meal toys, star wars collectable watches and toys, etc).It is so interesting to learn what goes on behind the camera. My favorite part of the show was the Jim Hensen exhibit. I grew up watching...
System feedback
- what was the most challenging part of this project? The most challenging part of this project was choosing what to do, and then finding different ways to visually show it. I chose a camera, and it was hard to figure out how complicated to get. I ended up just showing the basics, but I think with more time and research, I could get into more of the details of a digital camera. - did you leave...
Cynthia Lawson talk
I found Cynthia Lawson’s talk very interesting. I always think about how technology has changed the way we work, socialize and live our lives. It is all around us, and very hard to get away from. If we are not at our computers checking e-mails, we are on our phones, ipads, iphones, etc. When we are on our computers we may have ten internet windows open while we do work. The internet can be...
Framing a Design Problem
-If I could change one thing about my life it would be: To travel more. To bring my camera with me where ever I go. Sometimes I see something beautiful, something that inspires me or something that is just very interesting and I wish I had my camera to take a picture.
-If I could change one thing about the school it would be: More comfortable class rooms, a more organized elevator system, or a...
MoMA visit
The piece that stuck out most to me was Sharkrunners. It is a computer game based on sharks with GPS devices attached to their fin. Satelites are then able to detect their locations and movements. Players create a boat that goes out to sea, and see if they can find where the sharks are. They receive e-mails and texts when a shark gets closer or another ship is around.
It caught my attention...
Nurturing my own flow...
I usually use the internet for everything, sometimes I find myself doing work and looking up things on the internet at the same time, which makes finishing a project very time consuming! I turned off the internet for a few hours while I did some work and found that it helped me focus a lot better and I didn’t have any distractions. Unless I need the internet for what I’m working on, it...
Design Challenges
-re-designing menus based on their food, location, etc
-finding ways to teach kids through design
-collaborating with kids to make art
-helping others through design (I enjoyed working with others in our effort to help after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans)
-using more of my hand-done work in design
-using old graphic design as inspiration
-designing patterns/textiles based on nature
