5x5 crit response

As I was working on my 5x5 projects last week, I found some more enjoyable to do than others. Because most of my projects at Parsons are done on the computer, I thought it would be interesting, and fun, to step away from computer designs and use my hands. Using markers, paint and collage really enhanced my creativity and made me look at things differently.

After showing the class my 5x5 work, I found that most people were drawn to my drawing interpretations of my photographs. Luckily, I enjoyed doing those the most. It was fun to do, but also a big challenge. Working with markers is not like working on the computer where you can move things around, delete something you don’t like, etc. I found that my computer interpretations of the photos were more generic, and my drawings and paintings were more personal and unique.

I am trying to look even deeper into my 5x5 project on “the way I see my photographs using different materials”. Questions I can ask myself are:

What can I do with these drawings and paintings?

Why do people see photographs differently, and what does it mean?

What can different materials do to the way we see something?

I also found that people reacted to my kids collaboration. Working with kids is so fun, and so interesting to see how they think and how they see things. I was only able to work with my sister so far, but if I took this further I would work with groups of kids to see how they work. Take them away from the typical marker and paper, and enhance their creativity by making them use different materials.
